Hyacinth have an irresistible fragrance and a bounty of fun colors. Most bloom within 5-6 weeks when grown indoors with traditional forcing techniques, but will need to be pre-chilled.

How to Plant
Hyacinth can be grown indoors or outside. Indoor bulbs need to be pre-chilled before planting.
If planting outdoors bulb orientation is important. Make sure to look for tiny hair-like fibers (those are on the bottom of the bulb). If you do not see those hyacinth bulbs are darker on the bottom than the top.
Where to Plant
If planting outdoors, hyacinth should be placed in a hole about 4-6" deep in a well-draining location. Spacing between bulbs should be 5-6" apart. The spot you pick should receive abundant sunshine throughout most of the day.
When to Plant
Hyacinths are hardy in zones 3-8, but need to be planted about a month before the first hard frost.
Indoor hyacinth can be planted anytime November-February, after pre-chilling bulbs.
Pre-Chilling Your Bulbs
For the best results indoors, hyacinths need to be chilled for a total of about ten weeks in a cold, dry location. Temperatures need to be between 35-48 degrees. You can put them in a refrigerator drawer to easily chill them, but make sure they are not located near any fruit (as fruit gives off a gas that can harm your bulbs).
The absolute best way to pre-chill is to find a well-draining pot, cover them with a light layer of top soil and stick them in a basement or cellar and cover them with a dark cloth to prevent any light from reaching them. During this period check the topsoil for over-drying and if the top inch feels dry provide a light watering.
Forcing Instructions
To plant indoors simply select a vase or forcing glass, so that you can watch the roots grow and then pour pebbles into the bottom of glass vessel to a depth of 1 to 2”. Add just enough water that the it grazes the top of your pebbles and then place the bulbs on top (pointy end up). Set your container in a sunny window and in three to six weeks you'll be enjoying the heavenly scent of their fragrant flowers. Plant additional hyacinths in a new forcing container every three weeks to enjoy these cheerful blooms on repeat.

After Blooming
When planted outdoors, hyacinths will usually bloom again for 2-3 years. Forced bulbs are usually treated as annuals and discarded after they flower.
